About the metaphorical reenactment of history in Auber and Scribe's «Gustave III, ou le bal masqué»
Abstract
The paper considers political allusions in the opera by D.-F.-E. Auber and E. Scribe «Gustave III, ou Le bal masqué», which was staged at L’Académie Royale de Musique in Paris on February 27, 1833. In this work the historical past of Sweden was interpreted in such a way that contemporaries saw many more or less obvious references to the French history of recent years: from the revolution of 1789 to the July Revolution and the most recent attempts on the life of king Louis Philippe in 1832.
