Paris Conservatoire and Development of Violin Performance

Polina B. Podmazova

Abstract

The opening of the Paris Conservatoire in 1795 played a huge role in the development of both French and all European performing arts in the 19th century.

The article reveals the uniqueness of violin education in France in the 18th century and reveals the prerequisites that contributed to the emergence of the world's first educational institution, where all citizens had the opportunity to study for free, regardless of social status in society. The material of the article is supplemented by a translation into Russian of the law on the establishment of the conservatory and a list of its first professors. The initial period of formation of violin classes within its walls, associated with the names of famous French violinists - Pierre Gavinier, Rodolphe Kreutzer, Pierre Rode, Pierre Baillot, is analyzed in detail. It was thanks to their well-coordinated methodological work and commitment to common aesthetic ideals that the strongest violin school emerged in France, taking a leading position in Europe.

The Paris Conservatoire became not only a concentration of the best artistic forces in France, structuring the entire musical life of the country, but also served as a shining example of a secular educational institution for other major musical centers in Europe.
